Home design trends have gone through so many transitions over the last one-hundred years. The 1920s is known for its art deco, the 1950s for the retro designs, 1970s for the bohemian decor, 1980s and 90s for the bright pastels and wallpaper and even the 2010s for the darker paint colors and bolder finishes. But, here we are in 2020 and the themes and design choices from 1920s are slowly making a comeback. Here are some design trends that are 1920s inspired but are surely making a comeback one-hundred years later!

1. Metallics - from metallic surfaces to metallic accents, more classy colors like gold, black and bronze are making a comeback. Away with the chrome, and in with the deep-toned metallics! These can be incorporated in the home through picture frames, art wall hangings, accessories, side tables, lamps, light fixtures, chairs -  the possibilities are endless!

2. Freestanding bathtubs - we haven’t seen much of these types of baths, especially in most homes built in the 2000s (bathtubs turned into jet tubs) but the clean look they bring to a bathroom is really appealing to modern-day homeowners. It is minimalistic and now, looks luxurious.

3. Velvet - large velvet furniture is all part of an art deco design and as of late, velvet has made a comeback. In deep jewel-toned colors like emerald, garnet or dark blue will make the roaring 20s happen inside of your home! From couches to headboards, incorporating velvet into your home adds a 1920s touch.

4. Higher quality - higher cost but higher quality products are making more of a comeback now that consumers are more aware of being more green and eco-conscious. More multifunctional items that are built to last will really become a staple in this next decade, regardless of the price tag.

5. Style fluidity - just like the roaring 20s, this next decade will see more fluidity in design trends and more mixing of materials. The mixing of metals with leather, velvet, lace, rich wood and marble is the feminine meets masculine that the 1920s style once saw.

6. Area rugs - shaggy and fun-colored carpets or runners on stairs will be the new way to vamp up the 2010s love of hardwood flooring. They are meant to be statement pieces more than functional to add drama to the home.

7. Sunburst designs - art deco would not be complete without the classic gold sunburst design. These can be found in forms of mirrors, wall art and even lighting fixtures.

8. Wallpaper - wallpaper is making its comeback but in a more stylish way than it did in the 80s and 90s. The trend that is popular now is by putting wallpaper up as an accent wall or to liven up a small room like the laundry room or half bathroom. Adding more design elements like retro wallpaper into a room makes a room feel like a classic time machine.

9. Geometric patterns - clean lines and interesting shapes is what defined art deco in the 1920s. Differently shaped accessories like lights, bar carts, tables, bookshelves are making a comeback to make more of a statement.

10. Statement fireplaces - since this era was all about making statements, why wouldn’t the main object in a living room make for a bold one? Statement fireplaces are making a comeback to be the center stage of the room.

11. Tortoise Shell - tortoise shell is expected to come back in the 2020s and mostly for the reason that it looks classic but also exotic next to the metallics and bold color choices that these design trends are bringing.

12. Bold Colors - last but not least, the fact that bold colors are making a comeback is a huge test of the time. White and grey walls have been very popular in the 2010s but now more homeowners are open to the idea of dedicating a single space or room to see a punch of color. However, they aren’t just off-the-shelf colors like red or purple. You now see more rich and luxurious color choices like the deep jewel tones we talked about in the velvet furniture.
